Tourism has proved to have the power to change destinations, their societies and business landscapes, with multiple examples of places that are suffering from “too much success”. This workshop asks to reconsider the role of tourism – is it a tool for success or a goal in itself? When destinations and tourism businesses adopt a responsible agenda, tourism serves as a means for value creation and a tool for achieving positive outcomes for all its stakeholders. Seeking equity in tourism outcomes means that the needs of all stakeholders shall be recognised, hence tourism resources shall be protected in balance with providing for the needs of visitors and businesses.

The role of visitor management in sustainable tourism

 By the end of this session, students should be able to:

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the tourism system and recognize destinations as competitive units within the global market.  

Assess the significance of individual tourism products within the broader destination offering.  

Acknowledge that success in tourism is not automatic; it requires strategic effort, collaboration, and consistent investment.  

Identify sustainability as a core principle for tourism businesses and destination development.  

Describe the concept of sustainability across its key dimensions—environmental, social, economic—and explain both the positive and negative impacts of tourism.  

Demonstrate knowledge of key sustainability monitoring and certification systems and apply relevant criteria and indicators to real-world scenarios.  

Cultivate motivation to integrate sustainable principles into everyday life and personal travel choices.  

Understand the importance of evolving from sustainable tourism management toward a responsible tourism approach.  

Critically evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of tourism for destinations, including often-overlooked external costs.  

Recognize that a genuine understanding of tourism’s burdens requires rethinking measurement tools and improving data collection methods.  

Gain the necessary skills to design and implement effective visitor management strategies that balance visitor satisfaction with the preservation of tourism resources.
